CAMDEN, N.J. – Authorities say a man died after falling into a vat of melted chocolate in a New Jersey processing plant.
The Camden County prosecutor's office identified the victim as 29-year-old Vincent Smith II of Camden. He was a temporary worker at the Cocoa Services Inc. plant.
The accident happened Wednesday morning as Smith was loading chocolate into a vat where it's melted and mixed before being shipped elsewhere to be made into candy.
Prosecutor's spokesman Jason Laughlin says a co-worker tried to shut off the machine and two others tried to pull Smith out of the 8-foot-deep vat. He was hit and fatally injured by the agitator that mixes the chocolate.
Cocoa Services hires a second company — Lyons and Sons — to do the mixing."

Drunk badger disrupts traffic - Yahoo! News: "BERLIN (Reuters) – A badger in Germany got so drunk on over-ripe cherries it staggered into the middle of a road and refused to budge, police said on Wednesday. A motorist called police near the central town of Goslar to report a dead badger on a road -- only for officers to turn up and discover the animal alive and well, but drunk.
Police discovered the nocturnal beast had eaten cherries from a nearby tree which had turned to alcohol and given the badger diarrhoea. Having failed to scare the animal away, officers eventually chased it from the road with a broom."

Drunken tractor driver leads police on slow chase - Yahoo! News: "Tue Jul 7, 1:29 pm ET
BERLIN (Reuters) – A drunk German sparked a slow-speed police chase after stealing a tractor to get home from a nightclub after his girlfriend left without him, said police, who used pepper spray to try to stop the vehicle.
'After his girlfriend abandoned him in a night club, the 23-year-old driver, who doesn't own a license, commandeered the vehicle to make his way home,' a police spokesman said on Monday.
Six police cars began trailing the tractor, which was chugging along at 20 km (12 miles) an hour, after they were alerted to the theft at about 5 a.m. Saturday.
Officers tried holding up stop signs and directing pepper spray through the open window to bring the driver to a halt.
They then tried unsuccessfully to end his getaway by throwing nail belts on the road, but the tractor's tires proved too thick, said the police spokesman.
The 40-minute chase finally came to an end when officers shot at the tractor's tires after it rammed into a police car and collided with another vehicle."

Ga. jail inmates burned by own smoking habit - Yahoo! NewsBy RUSS BYNUM, Associated Press Writer Russ Bynum, Associated Press Writer – Wed Jul 8, 9:08 pm ET
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Two inmates at the Chatham County jail in coastal Georgia got burned by their own smoking habit when they started a fire trying to light a handmade cigarette with a spark from an electrical socket.

Both inmates were treated for minor burns after their cellmates quickly doused the fire with water, Sheriff's Deputy Ron Robinson said Wednesday. He said the jail banned smoking more than a decade ago, but it hasn't stopped inmates from improvising.

"Some of these guys have serious habits and cravings," Robinson said. "They try to smoke a lot of things ... lettuce, collard greens, turnip greens, whatever was served to them at lunch that day."

Jailers suspect the inmates tried to light up by sticking pencil lead into a wall socket in their cell, creating a spark that ignited a piece of cloth they intended to use as a match, Robinson said.

The burning cloth ended up catching fire to a sheet on a nearby bunk. While the fire was quickly extinguished, smoke spread throughout that section of the jail. All 23 inmates in the pod where checked by the jail's medical staff for smoke inhalation, but none were hurt seriously, Robinson said.

The sheriff's department would not release the names of the inmates suspected of starting the fire early Monday. Robinson said they would likely face in-house disciplinary action, but not criminal charges.

Meanwhile, he said, jailers have stepped up cell inspections to reduce the chances of another illicit smoke break turning into a fire alarm.

POND EDDY, N.Y. - A New York man was fatally electrocuted early Saturday when he tried to cut through a downed power line with an industrial saw.

Sullivan County authorities say the accident happened in the presence of firefighters who had been guarding the fallen line.

They say 64-year-old Mieczyskaw Mil, of Pond Eddy, was drunk and ignored repeated orders to stay away from the cable.

County Public Safety Commissioner Dick Martinkovic says officials chased the man away from the line several times before he fetched the saw from his house.

The incident happened not long after midnight.

Authorities say the line fell in a storm and had been down for about seven hours while utility crews tended to damage elsewhere."

College student tries to steal jail computer - Yahoo! News: "Tue Jun 30, 9:04 pm ET
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan University student William K. Bradley was sentenced for larceny in a building. He stole a computer. From the Kalamazoo County jail. Where he already was serving a sentence in a different case.
Kalamazoo County Circuit Judge Gary Giguere Jr. sentenced Bradley on Monday, telling the Kalamazoo resident his jailhouse theft was 'the dumbest crime I've heard today' and 'may be in the top half-dozen in my career.'
Bradley, who has racked up six felonies and four misdemeanors by the age of 25, agreed with the judge, saying, 'I'm not the best criminal.'
Bradley asked for home arrest, but Giguere instead ordered him back to jail for six months.
Western spokeswoman Cheryl Roland tells the Kalamazoo Gazette Bradley is a sophomore at the university."
